HOW AND WHEN TO MOVE YOUR HOLLYHOCKS IF NEED BE
Provided for you byWuv'n Acres©

Sometimes we need to move our plants, whether to sort out colors, to remove a plant which doesn't measure up to the others, a new gardening idea or other reasons. I've seen it said many times never to move a hollyhock plant, but I still cannot figure out why not. I have moved hundreds of plants and never had a single one die. Perhaps the way I move them is the reason. The height of the blooming period is no time to uproot your hocks. If at all possible, wait until the seeds have dried, the stalks are looking drab and summer is on it's way out. Before you grab that shovel, be sure to dig a deep hole longer than the root system of your plant, so be ready to dig up to a foot or more. This is not necessary, but a favor to your plant, giving it a better chance at survival and the ability to thrive in it's new home. Fill the hole with water and allow it to soak in all the way until the water is gone, then fill it back up, position the newly dug up hock over the hole, and allow the roots to wade in the water. While holding the hock over the center of the hole, backfill with well worked soil and pat it in well, placing the soil line at just about !/2" higher on the stalk than it was. Don't worry if your hock leaves all droop. If they refuse to come back after a few days, get the snippers after them and cut the leaves & stems back close to the ground, but leave enough so that you remember there is a plant there. Now just take care of it, and next spring, by golly, it will be back with a vengeance.
