MONOI OIL...a sub-page of Stressless TressesTM
Many women on the internet long hair care boards have often heard of Monoi but are not sure what it is or how to use it.
So, I'll try to create this page in hopes of helping to educate those who may benefit from using this great product in their hair care routine.
WHAT IS MONOI?
Monoi (pronounced MUH-NOY) is a coconut oil scented with Tahitian gardenia flowers.
You will find a genuine tiare flower in each true bottle of Monoi. It is not tested on animals and contains no preservatives or animal products.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
Long used on both hair and skin by women of Polynesian Islands, their long gorgeous hair is always so silky and shiny!
Keep in mind that while they don't typically run blow dryers and curling irons (the biggest part of why their hair is so beautiful...)
they have long known the benefits of using Monoi on both hair and skin.
WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE?
Monoi oil is available in various scents including:
Monoi Tiare Tahiti
Monoi with Sunscreen
Monoi Coco (coconut)
Monoi Tipanie (plumeria flower)
Monoi Santal (sandalwood scent)
Monoi Pitate / Pikake (romantic floral scent)
Monoi Rouge (tinted with iodine for sun taning use)
Ylang Ylang (preferred for hair conditioning by many)
Monoi Vanille (vanilla orchid and vanilla bean, MMM!)
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST and WHERE CAN I GET SOME?
To date I have not known this product to be available in stores. It is available via mail order from many companies.
Below are just a few prices and places to purchase Monoi in 4 ounce bottles.
Websites last checked for price comparison on June 21, 2002

OKAY, I HAVE IT. NOW WHAT?
Each woman approaches her hair care differently.
I will simply give you my routine and perhaps you can adopt it as your own or adjust it to fit your style.
Since my hair is over four feet long and very straight, I tend to wear it in a bun a majority of the time.
My hair has a tendency toward dryness as well.
Each night before I shower, I use a boar bristle brush first to get my hair in order without the stress of harsh brushing. Gentle, be gentle with your hair! Next, I use a Goody brand brush with a slightly firmer bristle. The first time I used Monoi I spilled quite a bit of it, as the bottles are thin and for my big thumbs, seemed rather topsy-turvy. The solution to this is to put your Monoi into a squirt bottle. I found that a small Calgon Mist bottle works excellent for this. Just squirt the Monoi onto your hairbrush and begin brushing. My hair enjoys a thorough quenching of Monoi before the shower, as I comb it through every inch of my hair. For those with very long hair, you know that being able to comb your hair and have it be completely tangle free is a wonderful feeling. Though I keep my hair up most of the time, when I do wear it down, naturally it tangles.
Before retiring for the evening, and if I am not going out further, I squirt Monoi on my hair again, even if I am not showering, and put it back into a bun after the tangles have been removed. The Monoi helps to ease the tangles out of my hair resulting in far less brushing damage.
If you are the type to hold your hair in a pony tail while yanking out the rats, Monoi is not a miracle cure to your problem.
It will help, but you should use Monoi as just one more step to beautiful hair rather than a cure-all for the acts you commit against your tresses.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO WITH MONOI?
Some women only use it on dry hair, some on wet, and some all the time. Remember that it is an oil, so don't slather it on and expect a miracle.
Use a gentle amount, rub between your hands and coat the length of hair before rolling.
Heat the bottle in a cup of hot water and use as a hot oil treatment.
It is especially helpful to comb tangles out with oil in, then wear a shower cap for half an hour before showering.
Use as an after-shower surprise to your skin. Easy now, just a little.
A great fly-a-way tamer. Use to hold down those fuzzies. Easy, just a little to smooth.
Sheen and shine. It's in this bottle! Smooth a bit on your brush when wearing straight.
As an after-shower spray, some dilute with half water and mist it on while combing out.
A few drops in the bath, especially the heavily scented Monoi. MMM!
