POND / AQUATIC PLANTS & SEEDS

LOTUS - AMERICAN WATER Nelumbo l. 5 seeds. $3.00. No need to spend a fortune on exotic plants for your pond, these seeds are so easy, you'll shake your head in disbelief. And think of the prices in the aquatic plant shops, good gosh, you could grow a pond full of plants for a few dollars! Seeds come with easy-to-read instructions will have your pond looking lovely before you know it. Assorted colors included may include pink, yellow or off white. Lovely! I'll be more than happy to scarify these for you. The shell is so hard, you'll need to nick this, but we have a clean way of cutting just enough of the shell so as not to induce harm to the embryo within. Sprouts in just a few days after properly following the instructions included. IRIS - BLACK GAMECOCK - SEEDS 20+ seeds - $2.50. My apologies, I did not get a photo of the pond until after the Gamecock had quit blooming. This photograph was taken January 6, 2006. Though it has been cool off and on, we seem to be skipping winter at this point. Look how green the foliage of the Gamecock is in January! Sadly, I made too much noise approaching the pond, scaring off the two Mallard ducks that were sitting in the middle of the pond.

GOURD SEEDS - HARDSHELLED TO PAINT & CARVE

PLEASE NOTE: Gourd seed packages contain 20+ seeds unless otherwise specified beside each item
Each package of seeds is $2.50 unless otherwise stated. .

GOURD - MIXED FUN PACK Lagenaria, Curcurbita and Luffa 20+ seeds - $2.50. If you live in a short season area, or perhaps you are just looking for foliage to cover a structure, trellis, etc. and you don't care what the fruit look like, this is the package for you! A fun mix of whatever we dump into the batch. Big, little, ornamental, hardshelled, you never know what you may grow with this one. Lots of bloopers included for those who love those oddball shapes.

APPLE GOURD - LARGE Lagenaria 20+ seeds - $2.50. Unique and very charming shape! While form may vary with weight and height, the fruits grown are simply wonderful! Artist Lady Gourdiva; Iva Slater of New Mexico shares what she's done with two of our apple gourds in the photo. Perfect for someone who enjoys apple decor or just a bit of whimsy! Approximately 90-100 days to maturity. Full sun.

BOTTLE GOURD Lagenaria 20 + seeds - $2.50. Another wonderful gourd if you are hoping for lush vines! Beautiful fruit is often made into birdhouses after it has dried and cured thoroughly. Easy to grow in full sun with well drained soil. Prefers to grown on a trellis but will grow on the ground. Trellising your gourds helps to keep your fruit well formed and free of the troubles caused when growing on wet, soggy ground. You'll love this one!

BOTTLE - MINIATURE / SNOWMAN Lagenaria 20+ seeds - $2.50. An adorable hardshelled gourd typically 3-4" tall which make a wonderful little snowman, especially for Christmas ornaments you wish to paint. Easy to grow in a small space. They do quite well on a trellis or even in a tomato cage. Approx. 90 days to maturity.

LARGE EGG - WILD 20+ seeds - $2.50. A larger, harder shelled gourd of good size. If you need large eggs, this is the variety you want! Very easy to grow. Provides much fun for everyone! Trellis or grow in a tomato cage to keep fruits off the ground. Very well formed egg shaped gourds dry with a thicker than our Chicken Egg Gourds, and can very much be carved, painted or crafted when cured. Excellent choice for making holiday ornaments or adding faux eggs to a floral or craft display. Approximately 90 days in full sun with well drained soil and regular water. A must try gourd!

CUCUZZI / CUZZI / NEW GUINEA BEAN / SNAKE 20+ seeds - $2.50. Though most any gourd is edible when young, the Cuzzi makes an especially good choice for eating due to it's similarity in shape to zukes or cucumbers. I prefer to allow mine to grow and would much rather eat zukes, such a shame to waste what could become a truly unique gourd in just 90-110 days + cure time. Makes fun snake-like gourd shapes which grow quite well hanging from a trellis. Grown on the ground, they tend to curl up. Can be manipulated while growing with pantyhose or strings. Full sun annual requiring space to grow and well drained soil. Sandy soil is a plus!

DIPPER - STANDARD Lagenaria 20+ seeds - $2.50. Used for ages as dippers and scoopers, you can grow these with ease in your own yard! Full sun and well drained soil, a bit of fertilizer if you don't mind, and your trellis could be covered with lush heart-shaped leaves next summer! As if the vines and beautiful flowers weren't enough, then come the many fruit which dry like hard wood and can be carved! While any gourd makes a good birdhouse, many gardeners use dipper gourds to add whimsy and charm to their green acres. So easy, so much fun. Great for kids!

MARANKA or FRENCH DOLPHIN / MONKEY Lagenaria 20+ seeds - $2.50. This is, to my knowledge, the most interesting gourd in existence! Deeply veined and ribbed, it is often called the Monkey gourd because of it's supposed resemblance to a monkey's rib cage skeleton. Amazing deeply sculptured gourd is quite a conversation piece. At a gourd show several years ago I was able to view in person the work of an artist who cut the handles from the gourd and sliced the Maranka in half lengthwise, then adding a hinge to create a garlic keeper. Most delightful addition to the garden with well drained soil and full sun. Your neighbors most likely won't have this one!

PENGUIN or POWDERHORN or CALABASH Lagenaria 20+ seeds - $2.50. Quite a fun gourd you will enjoy growing in your garden. Used in many ways with regard to crafts, the Penguin or Powderhorn gourd offers a lot of variety. Easy to grow. Enjoys growing on a trellis to keep the fruit off the ground. Hard shelled gourd requiring a growing and curing time before crafting. Treated with a fungicide. Don't eat the seeds.

GOURD SEEDS - SOFTSHELLED FOR FALL DISPLAYS
Please note that although these are listed as soft shelled, the Angel Wings, Crown of Thorns, some of the Ornamentals, and the Spoon gourd will dry firm and can be crafted as well.

AUTUMN or ANGEL WINGS 20+ seeds - $2.50.

APPLE / SMALL ORNAMENTAL Curcurbita pepo20+ seeds - $2.50. Small apple shaped gourd. Very cute!

CROWN OF THORNS 20+ seeds - $2.50.

ORNAMENTAL MIX 20+ seeds - $2.50. Each fall season, many people find themselves purchasing ornamental gourds for their fall displays, under the impression that they cannot grow their own. Not true at all! Ornamental gourds are very forgiving of lack of attention once the fruit has set on the vine. If you can remember to water the seedling and plant it in full sun, you will be rewarded with many gourds in vibrant colors!

While the ornamental gourds are typically the Curcurbita, (meaning softer shelled gourds) they will often dry firm enough to paint and carve. These gourds were sprayed with a gold paint and left to dry. Aren't they pretty?

Picture these on a wreath for your door in the fall! They will last many years. You will have enough to share with friends and family! In this mixture you may receive seeds from all of the gourds you see above, including some not photographed: Crown of Thorns, Orange, Warty, Bi-color Pear, Coyote / Buffalo, Spoon, Striped Pear, Egg, Angel Wings, etc.

Please note that I have not successfully dried some of the gourds without shrinkage & collapse. The small green striped gourd laying down in the first photo is often referred to as a Spinning or Dancing gourd. Though it can dry, it is a very thin shell and may collapse during drying.

ORANGE 20+ seeds - $2.50.

SNAKE - TRICO Trichosanthes cucumerina anguina 10+ seeds - $2.50. Please note this is not the hardshelled snake gourd, but rather a very unique gourd we are pleased to have back in stock again. After a two year absence from our website thanks to deer, it's back! The Republic of Maldives even offers a postage stamp featuring a Tricosanthes! The flowers on this vine are, in my opinion, equally as interesting as the inside of this wonderful juicy fruit! Full of pulpy seeds, you'll love this one!

SPOON 20+ seeds - $2.50. These gourds are basically a tiny dipper gourd, excellent for holiday ornaments, rattles, etc. They are a softer shell than most, but still firm enough to craft and paint. Very easy to grow. Reaches full maturity at approximately 90 days. Requires full sun and well drained soil. Performs well on a trellis or in a tomato cage. Fun for fall displays. At this time, our supply is from another source, so they will be treated. No to worry, just don't eat them.

EGGPLANT - BLACK BEAUTY Solanum melongena var. esculentum 20+ seeds - $2.50 per package. Easy to grow, easy to keep in stock...simply plant seeds every three weeks for a continuous crop up until August.

In one's lifetime, Eggplant Parmesian is a must!

1 large eggplant
2 eggs - beaten
1 cup dry bread crumbs
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Garlic salt
20 oz. spaghetti sauce
8 ounces Mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (not the cheap dry stuff that smells like dirty socks)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pare & slice eggplant into 1/4" slices. Dip each slice into egg batter, then coat with bread crumbs. Melt butter and oil together on medium high heat. Saute eggplant until golden brown on both sides. Remove to drain and cool on a paper towel.

Layer fried eggplant in a 2 quart casserole, sprinkling with garlic salt. (I prefer to use genuine garlic)
Coat entire layer with spaghetti sauce, sprinkle shredded cheese, repeat. Top with Parmesan cheese. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

GARLIC - NORTHERN WHITE 24 sets / 2 dozen cloves - $4.00 per package. This is a flavorful garlic! Not as strong as the Purple Stripe, but a good body and firm cloves. Easy to peel large cloves mince in a breeze and keep well in the refrigerator. I like to peel about a dozen cloves, keeping them in a small glass jar in the refrigerator for quick use.

Garlic is planted in spring or in the fall, but here in Northeastern Oklahoma I have been known to plant at other times. One year I planted on a nice Thanksgiving Day! It is often said that spring planted garlic will yeild smaller bulbs, but given this ample size, slightly smaller is not a problem. Simply place your clove rooted end (flat end) down into the soil at a depth of 1 1/2-2" deep, cover with tilled soil and fertilize well. We use chicken droppings here at Wuv'n Acres and our garlic really enjoys the benefits! We have never used chemicals on our garlic.

What is a head? What is a clove? What is a set?

A head of garlic is the entire thing pulled from the ground. When you remove the papery shell, you will see the individual bulbs which are called cloves. A set is the same thing as a clove, what you plant. Funny, because I always considered a set to be more than one. A corrmlet is a tiny growth not yet big enough to call a true clove. Included in your purchase will be 2 dozen garlic cloves, enough for a twelve foot row of garlic planted about six inches apart. You can plant the larger cloves for larger growing heads, and eat the smaller cloves.

MELON - EMERALD SERPENT An emerald green smooth melon is a bountiful producer! Often referred to as a Metki serpent, it is thought of as an Armenian cucumber, but resides in the melon family. A great market item due to it's abundant production.

PEANUT - SPANISH RED Arachis - 20+ seeds - $2.50.

Please do not order these seeds if any member of your household is allergic to nuts.
Some allergies are very serious.
Even the presence of nuts can cause a reaction.

Of all the novelty items we carry here at Wuv'n Acres, peanuts are one of the most interesting items. Kids all the way up to adults will find the way peanuts grow to be very fun and interesting. Think Peanut Butter!

Peanuts are best planted in a well tilled area. No need to rent or purchase a tiller, just make sure the soil is loose.

  • The 'spanish peanut' is the nut to use when making peanut brittle.
  • Peanuts grow undeneath the soil...did you know that?
  • Did you know that a large percentage of the peanuts grown in the U.S. are made into peanut butter?
  • Texas and Oklahoma produce most of the Spanish peanuts in the nation

Simply drop the nuts into the soil at a depth of 1 to 1 1/2' deep about half a foot apart. The plants will grow from 12-18' tall with pretty yellow flowers at the base of the plant. Don't worry when the petals begin to fall, this means that your peanuts are pollinated and will now begin to grow!

PEPPER - HABANERO - ORANGE The Habanero pepper is said to be the hottest pepper available.
The standard Jalapeno is quite wimpy next to the Habanero! According to a scale developed by a pharmacologist named Wilbur L. Scoville, the Habanero sports up to 300,000 units of heat! The 1 1/2' long fruit of the plant is a lantern shaped pepper which takes on an almost plastic or rubber appearance as it matures and changes colors from green to orange to red. Harvest from seedlings in just 90-95 days! Related cultivars? Scotch Bonnet or Congo Pepper. Whatcha gonna do with all that heat? Sauces, salsa, spices and seasonings... Add to your jerky, pickle it, use it in meat marinades...

PEPPER - HABANERO - RED 20+ seeds - $2.50 per package. The Habanero pepper is said to be the hottest pepper available.

    PEPPER - PETINE 30+ seeds - $2.50 per package.

PEPPER - TABASCO Capsicum 20+ seeds - $2.50 per package. You guessed it! The very pepper used to make none other than Tabasco sauce! Small peppers packed with a punch! I love the way the peppers change colors! Deep green, light green, yellow-green, orange, red, very pretty! Be careful when handling this pepper, as they are HOT. The Tabasco registers at 30-50,000 units as measured on Wilbur Scoville's heat index, developed in 1912 to measure the amount of heat produced by peppers. 577,000 is the highest yet recorded heat index, belonging to a Habanero pepper.

POKE WEED / POLK SALLET / POKEWEED Also called Polk Salad / Sallet / Salet - Phytolacca americana 2.50 for a good dash of seeds, typical 50+ count. Love it or loathe it... POKEWEED. Native American Medicinal Herb. Yes, the colors are that vivid! Squeeze a handful of berries and your hand will turn a gorgeous shade of reddish plum! (True, but don't do this) Often referred to as The Poor Woman's Brugmansia. You may have heard your older relatives pronounce this herbaceous plant as "Polk Salad" or "Skoke". This is not the correct pronunciation at all. It is POKE SALET (sah-let) meaning cooked greens. Best in zones 2-11. Full Sun / Partial Shade Does not do well in extreme northern climates Can tolerate short droughts but will grow like crazy with care and regular watering. Let's not discuss what it does with commercial growing additives!

Check with me in the spring and if I receive requests, I will list the Poke roots / tubers on Ebay as well. Also known as Poke, Pokum, Skokum, Pokeberry, Skoke, PigeonBerry, InkBerry and Cancerjalap. Not everyone finds poke to be a weedy nuisance. There are those of us country bumpkins who appreciate it's strength and durability as a perennial without fail. It is a non-woody and hollow-stemmed shrubby type of plant which often becomes tree-like! The unique colored dye from the berries is simply gorgeous. Can easily be used to dye wool and yarn items for use in rug making. This is not to mention the flow of songbirds it brings into the garden! My Poke is always planted in groups surrounded by stones near the edges of the garden. As I work, the sounds of Robins, Mockingbirds, and Bluebirds fill the air! This plant typically grows 3-5 feet with large leaves. Clusters of tiny flowers and drooping clusters of berries make it look much like a dwarf rain tree of sorts.

Though many people eat this plant, it is my understanding that it is poisonous if not properly prepared. I would not advise doing so unless you know what you are doing. Personally, I like it as an ornamental garden item and not a dinner item.

On a research note, it has been reportedly studied for it's content of an AIDS fighting protein which is stronger than AZT. Please note, this is merely for interesting facts. Use of the Pokeweed medicinally is not advised by the seller of this garden seed. Consuming Pokeweed improperly could lead to chromosome damage. Dermatitis may be a condition caused by the contact of the plant with your skin as well.

PUMPKIN - WEE BE LITTLE 20+ seeds - $2.50. 95-100 day annual vine with adorable rounded mini pumpkins. Great for those who do not have an abundance of land, these can easily be grown in tall tomato cages. Sow in late May to early June for a bumper crop of baby pumpkins your Trick-or-Treaters will be sure to enjoy! Easy and fun for kids, too!

SALSIFY - MAMMOTH SANDWICH ISLAND Tragopogon porrifolius 50+ seeds - $2.50. Also known as the Vegetable Oyster or Oyster Plant for it's taste, which resembles oyster. Even if you don't know what this is, grow it for it's biennial ornamental interest and you'll have gardeners gawking. Grown as a root crop, Salsify can be grown and eaten for it's roots as well as it's leaves as salad greens. Believe it or not, it is related to the Sunflower family! A variety of ways to cook this one provide interest, including boiling, then pressing it into patties and frying it. Hmm. Add cubes of Salsify to your soups, stews and more. Will display light / dark purple flowers and provide seed the following year of planting. Grows approximately 4' tall with grass-like straps of foliage. Requires a long growing season and patience while seed is germinating, which can easily take a month.

SPINACH - GIANT 50+ seeds - $2.50. Excellent choice for freezing and canning. A long standing spinach you'll enjoy tending as it is a heavy yeilder. Just 40-45 days to harvest. I admit, I've always thought spinach was disgusting, until I tried it raw on a sandwich in place of lettuce. My sandwiches have never been the same. Tender young baby spinach leaves on a big Dagwood sandwich with extra pickles...OH MY! Smooth, dark leaves are chock full of vitamins and minerals. Plants easily grow 25" wide! An older variety from the late 1920's.

SPINACH - CLIMBING VINE RED Basella rubra 20+ seeds - $2.50. You'll have a hard time deciding if this one goes in the veggie bed or the flower bed. You can even sprout stem cuttings in water and grow them as a houseplant! Not the same old green, this one has red stems! This is a unique climbing vine with EDIBLE spinach! Not your typical green stuff, this plant has beautiful hues of red/burgundy in the leaves and hot fuchsia pea-like flowers in long standing spikes above the foliage. This unique spinach has many others names, such as Malabar spinach and gui vine spinach. Though not a botanically labeled spinach, it is indeed edible. The young and tender leaves taste best! If you grow this just outside your kitchen door in a tomato cage, you will be able to snip off a few leaves when it comes time for a salad or a sandwich. You can cook it, too, and the bonus is that it doesn't get slimy like that nasty canned spinach. Ugh! Seeds can be a bugger to germinate sometimes, be patient. Approximately 85 days to harvest. Easy.

SPINACH - CLIMBING VINE GREEN Basella rubra 20+ seeds - $2.50. Image shown is of red spinach to give you an idea of what you will grow. I will update with a new photo next spring when ours begins to grow again. You'll have a hard time deciding if this one goes in the veggie bed or the flower bed. You can even sprout stem cuttings in water and grow them as a houseplant! This is a unique climbing vine with EDIBLE spinach! SPROUTS Before you turn your nose up, give sprouts a little thought. Many seeds make absolutely excellent sprouts for sandwiches, soups, salads and so much more! Extremely easy to grow in just a few days, sprouts are nutritious - full of vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes. As a natural source of fiber and a complete food, they are superb! Low in carbohydrates and also calories, dieters rejoice!

There are numerous ways to use sprouts, including salads, soups, sandwiches, hamburgers, garnishes, casseroles and more! You can even dry them, then run them through a food processor to create a flour rich in vitamins!

My absolute favorite sprout is on a bacon sandwich with alfalfa sprouts, avacado and cheese. Now granted, the bacon and cheese probably cancel out the nutritional aspect, but it sure is good eating!

We currently offer several seeds, never chemically treated, which are perfect for sprouting:

  • Amaranth

  • Alfalfa
  • 4-5 day growing. A leafy sprout with the highest in mineral content. Protein, Vitamins A, B-complex, C, D, E and K. Superb on sandwiches.
  • Black Eyed Pea
  • 3-4 day growing. Protein, minerals, Vitamins A and C. For a fresh pea taste, choose this one!
  • Black Turtle Bean

  • Buckwheat
  • Extremely fast sprout! A tender sprout with nutty flavors.
  • Clover - Crimson

  • Garbanzo Bean
  • 3-5 day growing. Protein and numerous minerals. Wonderful in salads, a fabulous snack all by itself.
Tease the kids with this one, it looks like a blobby brain when sprouted!
  • Millet

  • Mung Bean
  • 3-4 day growing. Protein, Vitamins A, C, iron and calcium phosphorus.
  • Mustard

  • Pumpkin

  • Wheat - Whole grain

  • SQUASH - EIGHT ( 8 ) BALL ROUND ZUKE Curcurbita pepo 20+ seeds - $2.50. No need to mention this squash is probably one of the most incorrectly spelled words in the English language. Zuchinni / Zucchinni / Zucchini. Easier to say Zuke. Also known as Courgette. I am very thrilled to provide these seeds for others! I've had plenty of zucchini, but in all honesty, I'd give it all up for this one variety in a heartbeat! It grows quickly, matures in no time, and seems to have an endless supply of good sized zukes. Though picked when they are about a handful, they can be eaten when a bit larger, though the larger you allow them to grow, the tougher the skin gets. At the height of the season, I was eating these for supper each and every night! I simply cut a zuke in half, scoop out the seeds, and pop it into my rice cooker for a little bit. Add butter, salt and pepper, and yum! But don't forget the holidays...think Zucchini bread!

SQUASH - GOLD NUGGET / GOLDEN NUGGET Curcurbita maxima 20+ seeds - $2.50. An 85-day winter squash which is often referred to as an oriental pumpkin, no surprise there. It looks just like a tiny pumpkin! Growing on average from one to three pounds each, it easliy stores in a cool area for up to two months. I actually prefer to bake the entire squash whole instead of cutting it in half, or you can bake it as you would an Acorn squash. Loaded with Vitamin A, this little squash is perfect for dining alone, or for two. Bake several when you have guests or a family dining. An easy substitute for sweet potatoes or yams. With proper conditions, you can expect to grow about a dozen fruit from each plant. Shell is hard, so be extremely careful when cutting raw.

SQUASH - SPAGHETTI 20+ seeds - $2.50. Very easy to grown and a real treat to eat! After harvest, simply store your squash, which keeps for long periods! Cut in half, remove the pulp, bake face down for thirty minutes then flip it over, baking another 30 minutes. Add butter, sauce or your choice of goodies on top and wa-la! One squash produces four cups of 'spaghetti' strands. Really looks like spaghetti! Simply scrape the inside of the squash to produce the long, fiberous strands used in place of pasta.

SQUASH - TURK'S TURBAN 20+ seeds - $2.50 A very unique and quite ornamental squash. Put something different on your table for Thanksgiving! This is a Turk's Turban. It is an edible Winter squash, not a gourd, as some would label. A unique red, orange and multi-striped squash requiring 95-110 days of frost free weather. It reminds me of the hat worn by Aladdin! Food preparation varies, but it is so delicious when sliced in half, scoop out the inside, add butter, brown sugar, cover with foil and bake. MMM!

TOMATILLO - GREEN Physalis ixcarpa 50+ seeds - $2.50 per package. Very easy to grow! Unique plant bears hundreds of fruit over the season! Papery husks similar to Chinese Lanterns fill with a bright green fruit that later darkens with maturity. When the 'balloon' is full, you can pick them, roll them in dishwater (no, I'm not kidding) to remove the sticky husks, then make Salsa Verde...Green Salsa! Yum! Hubby makes this every summer for us, and I find myself eating it for breakfast sometimes. (Again, I kid you not!) Tiny yellow flowers make way for the fun fruit. We also have Tomatillos available in purple, too, and what a beautifully and different salsa that makes! Loves the sun and thrives in the heat of summer when other plants are gagging.

TOMATILLO - PURPLE Physalis ixcarpa 50+ seeds - $2.50 per package. Very easy to grow! Unique plant bears hundreds of fruit over the season! Papery husks similar to Chinese Lanterns fill with a small purple fruit which deepens with color as maturity arrives. When the 'balloon' is full, you can pick them, roll them in dishwater (no, I'm not kidding) to remove the sticky husks, then make Salsa Verde...Purple Salsa! Yum! Hubby makes this every summer for us, and I find myself eating it for breakfast sometimes. (Again, I kid you not!) Tiny yellow flowers make way for the fun fruit. We also have Tomatillo seeds available in green, and what a beautifully and different salsa that makes! Loves the sun and thrives in the heat of summer when other plants are gagging. Pardon the photo, I didn't get a picture of the purple, but you get the jist.

    TOMATO - CHERRY 30+ seeds - $2.50 per package.

TOMATO - ROMA 30+ seeds - $2.50 per package. An absolutely excellent garden tomato you'll love. Much less waste than with large tomatoes, you can pick but a few and have plenty for lunch. A good sandwich tomato, not to mention it's invaluable inclusion in recipes abundant. Sauces, salsas, bruchetta, so much more. Easy to grow, an attractive oval shape.

    WATERMELON - CRIMSON SWEET 20+ seeds - $2.50

    FLOWERS

AMARANTHUS - FUCHSIA Amaranthus 250+ seeds - $2.50. In the photo provided, my younger son stands next to one single growth of this beautiful Amaranthus. It's hard to believe that one single seed, yes, ONE, will produce a plant of this size. And just imagine...there are hundreds of seeds in this package!

Amaranth is traditionally a leafy green plant with attractive seed heads in long mass groupings of seed heads. This one in particular is a brilliant fuchsia (think pinkish red) which seems to absolutely glow in the sunshine, and is simply amazing at sunset! The stems are fuchsia, the leaves and the veins, it's quite a bright one, not a dull and boring green. It is very easy to grow, and here in Northeastern Oklahoma, comes back without fail everywhere the seeds have fallen. Have no fear, don't want it there? Just yank it up. For edible purposes, simply harvest young greens 5-6 weeks after sowing. Growing 2-4' tall, it is very impressive planted in mass, or simply in a grouping surrounded by stones or landscaping rock. Makes a nice fresh cut flower or filler.

Though suggested to be in the full sun, many of our plants are in the partial sun and they do just wonderfully! Planting is so easy! Start indoors 2-4 weeks before the last frost in spring. Sow seeds in a good seed starting mix, not potting soil. Cover seeds very lightly with preferably sifted soil...not too much! Mist soil well. Begins best in a 70° environment.in 6-10 days. These seeds are tiny, so please don't despair. Little seeds grow just as well as large seeds.

AMARANTHUS - LOVE LIES BLEEDING Polygonum orientale 250+ seeds - $2.50 Yet another of the fabulous Amaranthus we grow here at Wuv'n Acres. An heirloom treasure you'll want to grow and save seeds from for future gardeners! An easy to grow annual plant featuring long reddish colored strands of tiny blooms with a bounty of precious seed inside. A mere shake of the limb releases many seed, therefore making it a wonderful self-seeding plant. Don't want the extras? Simply pull them up, it's that easy. Late summer to fall flowering. Can reach 60" tall. Protect from strong winds to prevent breakage. Excellent everlasting choice in floral displays. Appreciates rich, well drained soil.

BEE BALM / PURPLE BERGAMOT Monarda Fistulosa Bergamot $2.50 - package = 1 smidgen (approx. 100+ seeds) What a unique bloom this one sports! It reminds me of a sparkler on the 4th of July, only fuzzy. It's minty fresh scent calls our winged friends from afar. You'll be amazed at the butterflies this one brings in. Very easy to propagate by seed or root division in spring or late fall. After the first blooming session has ended and seed heads are dry, you can cut the plant back to bring on a fresh burst of attractive foliage. Nice!

BLACKBERRY LILY / LEOPARD LILY Belamcanda chinensis 20+ seeds - $2.50. Seeds benefit from a cold period, so fall planting is a good idea, or toss the seeds into the refrigerator until you are ready to plant them. Actually an iris, this big plant boasts hundreds of tiny yet wonderful toad lily blossoms! Quaint and quite interesting speckled flowers are a sweet treat topping off the sturdy foliage. Propagates easily, divides well. Performs quite well in the shade. When it is time to harvest seeds, they truly do resemble a cluster of blackberries!

BUCKWHEAT - SEED PACKET $2.50 (Fagopyrum esculentum) 1 tsp. = approximately 100 seeds. Plenty! Here's a bit of trivia you won't want to forget! Did you know that buckwheat honey has eight times the antioxidant levels of clover honey? Don't believe me? Click here to read for yourself. Yep, not only is this pretty little plant beneficial to the soil when tilled under after it's lifecycle is completed, it attracts honeybees and has a multitude of uses. Don't forget about Buckwheat pancakes! Seeds are available in seed package for $2.50 or half pound packages for $5.00 for those who wish to grow a nice crop of Buckwheat. 2-3 pounds will cover 1,000 square foot. Grown as an annual.

CANNA 10 large seeds - $2.50. Plant food choice of the South American Owl Butterfly! I will be more than happy to stratify (file) these before sending upon request. We have a unique method which allows for a smooth nick and keeps your fingers safe! Cannas are incredibly durable and very easy to grow. After filing, simply drop the seeds into a glass of clean, warmish-hot water. When they produce roots, plant them. Yep, it's that easy! Average height varies from 3-15 foot, depending on soil quality and amount of water provided. A nice blend of many colors including red, orange, yellow and more. Our current stock consists of King Humbert Orange, King Humbert Yellow, King Humbert Red, City of Portland, President Red and some very nice striped canna as well. While zones under 7 would be safer in digging up the rhizomes for winter storage, I have never dug mine up here in zone 7 and they survive every year in the ground just fine. Full sun / partial sun. Germinates in 10-20 days in proper conditions and lighting. A fun and easy tropical looking plant!

CARDINAL CLIMBER Ipomoea x multifida 20+ seeds - $2.50. Often mixed up with Cypress Vine. Cypress vine seeds look like little mouse droppings, while the Cardinal Climber seeds resemble typical morning glory seeds. A mere 73 days until bloom! This annual vine takes off quickly and puts on quite a show with it's fern-like foliage and tiny red trumpet blooms! Beautiful on arbors and trellises. Seeds are poisonous, so use caution! Of course you wouldn't eat them. Full sun to partial shade is fine for this beauty. Take it easy on the nitrogen or you won't see many blooms. Very nice!

CASTOR BEAN Ricinus communis $2.50. A variety of colors and sizes.
Please see our Castor Bean Page for other varieties such as Zanzibar, Miniature Gray, Carmencita Red, Carmencita Pink, Variety Pack and more!

    CHINESE LANTERN $2.50 - 50+ seeds.

CINNAMON VINE / CHINESE YAM POTATO VINE Dioscorea oppositifolia 10 tubers - $2.50. Also known as Air Potato, though this is not Dioscorea bulbifera. While this vine can be quite a trouble maker in some areas, we provide it for our responsible gardener friends who are interested in it's medicinal properties. If you are not familiar with it's ability to take over, we highly suggest you do the research before planting it.

A wonderful perennial vine which returns each year from underground tubers in warm zones or from little 'potatoes' or 'yams' which fell the year before. A pretty vine sporting a plentitude of tiny potatoes - much for conversation! Grows tall and cascades from trellises in a wonderful fashion. A unique item to add to the garden. One year I didn't have any tubers to offer customers because a critter stole them all! Funny thing is, I found them the next spring when they emerged from the spots this critter hid them in! Cannot ship to Alabama.

CLEMATIS - SWEET AUTUMN VINE Clematis paniculata 50+ seeds - $2.50. Zones 4-9. A beautiful perennial vine that is absolutely covered in tiny white flowers, a brilliant burst of white even from distances far away when in full bloom. Seeds can be testy and sporadic to germinate, but the best way I've found to grow Clematis from seed is to fall plant the seeds, mark the spot, and allow them to go through natural fluctuations in temperatures. Come back in the spring and check for progress. Easily grown from seed and cuttings. A nice country touch! Beware the Epicauta pennsylvanica - a nasty black beetle that will devour your clematis. If you spot even just one beetle, treat your clematis immediately!

CLOVER - CRIMSON Trifolium incarnatum 50 seeds - $2.50. Also known as Italian Clover. Generally grows the average of 2 1/2 foot tall, topped by an erect tip in gorgeous scarlet red hues. Make a mass bed for the effect, plant in groups among your plants or just plant it in pots...there are numerous ways to grow it. In mass plant, you will find the area to look like a wave or red for weeks and weeks!

This winter annual does best in zones 6 and all zones warmer. but I have had no problem here in zone 6-7 Northeastern Oklahoma. I often plant this legume with Buckwheat, another tidy cover crop! It prefers moist soil and does not tolerate drought well. In other words, water it and care for it like any other plant. We wouldn't look too good without water, would we? Grows faster than other clovers and thus is a beneficial helper in keeping the weeds out!

A p.h. of 6.5 is most preferred for crimson clover, but don't fret if you don't know what this means. Basically, you need decent soil for it to do well. Tolerates a bit of shade but prefers the full sun. Simply plant 1/2-3/4" in a well tilled area and keep watered. Often planted in late summer or in the fall at least six weeks prior to the first fall frost in order to give it time to get established and set for the winter. In areas where the temperature does not get below -10°, it will return come spring for a beautiful display. After it's season is over with, simply till it under to aid in adding nitrogen to your soil! This is one "cannot lose" plant to grow!

CLOVER - NEW ZEALAND WHITE DUTCH Trifolium repens $2.50 per 1/2 TSP. SEEDS = Plenty! Remember when you were a kid, a flower child, perhaps? Sitting in the park plucking long strands of clover, twisting and braiding them into necklaces, bracelets? Pretending you were a princess? Okay, well at least I did. *chuckle* The White Dutch Clover is also known as Ladino Clover. Just a bit of trivia for you. A perennial clover which does well in zones 6-9. In late spring to early summer, this clover grows on average about a foot tall. Sprinkle this spoonful here and there in full sun, well drained soil. Allow new seeds to dry and fall from the plant and you'll find more next season.

COCKSCOMB (CRISTATA) Celosia cristata $2.50. Approx. 200 seeds per scoop. Even after the gardening season has been tucked away for winter, this wonderful plant will provide you with a beautiful bouquet to get you through until spring! Picked when dry, the colors remain in beautiful hues of deep pink and fuchsia. Wow. What a gorgeous dried floral display! I have a nice display of these in our bathroom for all to see year 'round.

COLUMBINE - McKanas Giant Yellow Aquilegia $2.50. Photo shown is for example of bloom shape, as we do not have a current photo of the McKanas Yellow Giant. Very attractive with unique, perhaps odd, blooms! McKanas Giant Columbine will make quite a statement in your garden. A favorite among Columbine growers, McKanas will quickly become your favorite, too! Large yellow blooms, such a pretty one!

COLUMBINE Aquilegia $2.50. Very attractive and oddly unique blooms! A nice mixture of yellow, pink, purple, every Columbine we grow is tossed into this lovely mixture! Barlows, Winkys, so much more!

COTTON - NATURAL BROWN 5 seeds - $2.50. My apologies for the low seed count. Supply is scarce and we
would rather share a bit than hog them all. Limited supply for a limited time. Hopefully next year will be better. Natural brown color, natural seeds, natural cotton, no chemicals. Not just scraggly plants on a farm, no sir! When grown in a garden and cared for properly, cotton makes an absolutely beautiful plant. Those not familiar with cotton may not even know what it is until it bursts forth with it's fuzzy bolls! A mixed seed package with creamy yellow and blended pink blooms. Fibers are white. Requires a long growing season and plenty of warm full sunshine. Very nice plant with interesting foliage and attractive Hibiscus-like flowers followed by bolls (pods) full of cotton-covered seeds. Very pretty!

CYPRESS VINE Ipomoea 20+ seeds - $2.50. Often mixed up with the Cardinal Climber, this one is much airy, with fern-like foliage, very fine and feathery. Cardinal climber seeds look typical of morning glory seeds, while the Cypress Vine seeds look like small rodent droppings. A delight to hummingbirds, attracted to it's long-throated red blooms about the foliage. An annual 8-10' climber, this one is so pretty.

ATTRACTS HONEYBEES DATURA - LILAC THROATED JIMSON Jimsonweed 50 seeds $2.50. A tall Datura with smaller flowers than other Datura. Throats are lined with deep purple hues! Plants can become five foot tall with ease, so support from winds may be necessary. Blooms up until late summer, then followed by large spine-covered seed pods which create interest. Use gloves when handling seedpods, you'll surely be poked, which really itches!

ATTRACTS HONEYBEES DATURA 50 seeds $2.50. Even young plants put off hundreds of huge 6" blooms which smell like heaven must! Honeybees can't help themselves when it comes to the sweet smell calling them closer. Profusions of blooms every evening can be kept going full speed ahead by simply removing the spent blossoms, which can number in the hundreds, and we're not kidding. I have a dozen of these plants that are several years old now along the front of our fence by the road, and WOW, does that attract attention! Very easy to grow perennial beauty! See additional pictures here: (1) (2) (3)

ATTRACTS HONEYBEES DATURA - TRIPLE PURPLE 20 seeds $2.50. Stunning flowers will have your neighbors green with envy! In our area, the frost will kill these pretty plants, so I dig mine in the fall to live in the greenhouse over winter. Another item of confusion due to folks using the wrong common names. This plant is of Datura, not Brugmansia. Brugmansia plants are known as "Angel's Trumpets" because the flowers look down as if 'angels' would look down from a 'heaven', whereas the Datura features blooms which face upward. Often called the "Devil's Trumpets" as if they were 'devils' down below looking up toward a 'heaven'. Now that we have that mystery solved, you must grow them in your garden! Stunning trumpet shaped blooms feature two and often three frilly necked ruffles about the blooms. Not one, not two, but three within itself. Beautiful!

FOUR O'CLOCKS - TUBERS / ROOTS - FRAGRANT MARVEL OF PERU Mirabilis jalapa 1/2 pound of roots / tubers - $10.00. Mixed colors. Will dig and ship late April through about September. For those with shorter seasons or if you just can't wait a full year to see blooms from seed, we offer topped (foliage removed) tubers. Fear not, plant them early enough and you'll see blooms the same season. I will send the largest tubers I can find and mix in some other sizes. Generally, tubers with a pink tinge will bear pink flowers, the greenish-yellow tips will sport yellow blooms. This item will require Flat Rate shipping, a higher charge than our standard $3.00 for seed orders.

CREEPING CUCUMBER Melothria pendula, syn. Melothria pendula var. pendula Also known as Guadelupe cucumber. This tiny vine works it hardest to please you in many different ways. The dainty little leaves are very attractive. Soon come the tiny little flowers and still yet to come are the fruit...ah, the fruit! This tiny viner, also known as Tum Lung in the Orient produces tiny fruit which much resembles an itty bitty watermelon. Considered a member of the curcurbita family, but not at all like the gourds America is used to. This fruit will shrivel up like a little raisin after it's show is over so be sure to squeeze the seeds out before it does or allow to dry and separate the flesh from the seeds often. Prefers to grow in full / partial sun sheltered from wind, but mine adorns the base of our black walnut tree each year with ease.

Rumored to be Dioecious; requiring both male and female to reproduce
but since you are receiving 20+ seeds, it is doubtful that you would receive twenty which were all the same sex. No need to worry. Odd that this vine is considered a weed in Hawaii,
so it is therefore not to be shipped to such.
It is my understanding that Ivy Gourd is to Hawaii is what Kudzu is to the south. Hmmm. You will receive 20+ seeds which is more than you will need. Please share them with others.

    JASMINE - ORANGE Murraya paniculata 10 seeds - $2.50.

JEWELS OF OPAR Polygonum orientale 100+ seeds - $2.50. Sedum-like foliage supports tall stalks with tiny jewels of ruby, burgundy and red. Prior to the beauty of the tiny little beads, itty bitty bright pink flowers appear! When the jewels are done 'sparkling', they turn grey and dangle from the stalks, meaning it is time to remove them, (they are full of seeds) or allow them to drop seeds and produce mass bedding. Gorgeous!

LIPSTICK PLANT Bixa orellana syn. Bixa katagensis Also known as Urucum or Annatto and Achiote. Not to be confused with Aeschynanthus radicans. 20+ seeds. $2.50. Alright, so you wanted weird, this is it. If you have seen the movie "Little Shop of Horrors" then you will be able to imagine this one. The monster plant which opened it's jaws begging for human blood, well, this is what this plant reminds me of, only when the 'jaws' are opened, many seeds are contained within. Quite a sight, indeed. Depending on your gardening methods as well as your zone, this South American plant can range from 6-15' tall. It is winter hardy only to zone 11, so consider growing this one indoors or make sure you bring it indoors during cold weather below 40° Pink blooms appear late in the season. Take it easy on the water, this one doesn't like to sit in soggy soil.

The seed pods are gorgeous before drying and opening to release the seeds. In fact, if you have grown castor beans to maturity, the seed pods remind me of them, except they are shaped more like a pistachio.
Used in many ways in a variety of Mexican dishes ranging from color to taste. It is even used to color butter, cheese and popcorn! Though the seeds have a fragrance about them, worry not, the scent will not transfer to the taste of your food. Used often as a substitute for Saffron, an expensive spice which lends similar color.

LOVE IN A PUFF / BALLOON or HEART VINE Cardiospermum halicacabum 20+ seeds - $2.50. Everyone should grow this vine, it is SUCH a wonderful addition to the garden! Absolutely beautiful when grown on a trellis. I grow mine in tomato cages because they rise to the top and then cascade over - what a beautiful thing! Dainty foliage with gazillions (I love that word!) of puffed up ballons, each housing three round black seeds with a white heart on them. Too cute. There are tiny little white flowers all over the vine which attract the butterflies and honey bees. I can't say enough about this vine. It readily self-seeds here in our zone 7, so I never have to replant it. I think of weddings when I see this vine. For another image, click here. Cannot ship to Alabama.

MILKWEED - MONARCH BUTTERFLY WEED / MILKWEED Asclepias viridis 20+ seeds - $2.50. Also known as Pleurisy root. Ah, so you saw the term "weed" and now you're leaving? But wait, wait, wait. The Monarch Butterfly wants you to know! This particular Milkweed; Asclepias viridis (aptly named for the Greek God - Asklepias) is a safe haven for the eggs of the Monarch Butterfly.

One of over 200 species of Milkweed, you may be more familiar with the more widely grown Ascelpias tuberosa; the butterfly weed many have come to know with it's clusters of tiny orange flowers. You may even know the orange variety as Pleurisy root. Please note that we also carry seeds for this variety from time to time. An excellent source of nectar for the Monarch butterfly, you'll love growing this one in your garden for several reasons, the most important, knowing that you are contributing to the survival of such a wonderful part of Nature's world. Before you chalk the smell and appearance up to unpleasant, read on. Milkweed contains active cardiac steroids known as cardenolides. When consumed by the Monarch caterpillars, the cardenolides remain in their systems well after the adults complete the pupae stage. Why consume such a bitter dinner? Ah, birds and other would-be predators find it horribly offensive to consume a critter full of such toxins. Pretty clever, Mother Nature!

Perhaps you may wish to plant several varieties of Milkweed in your garden to see which plants the Monarch will choose to host her nursery of young.

MILKWEED - GREEN Asclepias viridis 20+ seeds - $2.50. At only 12-18" tall, this little sucker gets busy when it's blooming time! Though some would say it lacks the vivid color of it's relative Butterfly Weed; which is bursting with orange, this one tends to have yellow, green and a lovely cream hue about it. Best performance can be found in a full sun location.

MILKWEED - COMMON Asclepias syriaca 20+ seeds - $2.50. A 4-6 foot tall herbaceous perennial best in zones 4-9. Full sun to partial shade.

One of over 200 species of Milkweed, this is definitely different than the typical Butterfly Weed you are used to with the orange tipped stalks. This unique milkweed features long pods with the most wonderful white and feathery plumes attached to the seeds while in the pods which enable the seeds to 'fly' when the pods break open. The fuzzies are removed to save you the trouble, but you'll see them again when you harvest seeds from your own plants.

MONEY PLANT or HONESTY or SILVER DOLLAR PLANT Lunaria 20+ seeds - $2.50. I remember seeing the shiny silver-like coins in a woman's home when I was a child. I thought about that everlasting floral display for years to come, and now I enjoy not only growing my own, but having a vase full of them year 'round! Such a fun plant more people should grow. Very easy to grow plant exhibits unique foliage the first year. The second year, a burst of tiny violet-shaped flowers appear, only to be followed by very unique see through green pods with 1-3 seeds inside each. After the plants die back, the pods will turn brown. Each pod will divide into three parts, but unless the wind blows, hidden inside are the seeds. If you gently peel back the petals on each side, you will find many stalks loaded with amazing coin-shaped pods with a shiny appearance similar to Mother of Pearl. Absolutely beautiful and very expensive when purchased at your local florist. Also known as Satin Flower, Moonwort, Bolbonac. Zones 4-9, though some in zone 3 report luck in growing. Partial shade, dappled sunlight is best. Well drained soil. Requires long season to mature.

MULLEIN - ARCTIC SUMMER FROST Verbascum 1/8 tsp. of seeds. These seeds are tiny, but you'll receive well more than plenty. We refrigerate seeds after harvest to assist in stratification period. Tall stalks with graduated lemon yellow blossoms are the highlight of this plant after the first year. Initially they are a wonderful mass of velvety leaves similar to Lamb's Ears, but not as messy and unkempt looking. Oddly enough, while everything else is dormant, this plant is busy doing it's thing in winter, getting ready to burst forth with amazing stalks come summer. Very interesting herb.

A member of the Snapdragon or Figwort Family Scrophulariaceae A unique biennial herb which is two in one! Dainty 3/4' lemonade yellow blooms graduate a single 36-96' unbranched sturdy stalk which is similar in blooming nature as a Hollyhock. Downy fuzz-covered leaves stand up to cold weather! While everything else is ugly and brown, the Mullein remains attractive throughout the seasons maintaining it's charm. Also called 'Quaker Rouge' in that it has been used as an organic make-up...when rubbed on the skin it may cause your cheeks to become red and irritated. (I think I'll stick to my store bought regimen, though.) A member of the Snapdragon or Figwort Family Scrophulariaceae. A unique biennial herb which is two in one! PASSION FLOWER / MAYPOP Passiflora incarnata 20+ seeds - $2.50. What an amazing bloom. You'll want to visit our Passion Flower Page for many more pictures and loads of information. Absolutely amazing flower is so bizarre you'll think it's artificial, but oh no, it's quite real, and quite fragrant! Bring on the bees with this one. The fragrance and the blooms...I can't decide which wins. Requires stratification, but easily accomplished by keeping the seeds in the refrigerator until spring or planting in the fall in warmer zones. Give it full sun and regular well-drained water for a perennial show your neighbor's can't beat.

POKEWEED Poke weed - Polk Salad / Sallet / Salet - Phytolacca americana 50+ seeds - $2.50. Often called the Poor Woman's Brugmansia. It's a shame more people don't recognize this one as a multi-purpose plant. Called a weed and shamed to the back acres, what a waste of talent. When cared for as a plant and not a weed, this herb offers so much so few know about. A bounty of berries await the songbirds, and who couldn't use a few of those in the garden? In our zone 7 they return by the root each year, producing a shrub-like umbrella with cascading clusters of berries in bright green, turning pink and then later turning a deep purple, almost black. The fuchsia dye from these berries is beautiful and bright! Young tender shoots are cooked and eaten much like spinach! There are even festivals celebrating Pokeweed!

POPPY - ORIENTAL - Oriental Blend - Papaver orientale 500 seeds, heavy on the pink, includes red as well. Self-sows, acting like a perennial! This season we enjoyed an absolute profusions of these beautiful blooms. We are thrilled to share our bounty! Growing on average about two foot tall even in dappled sun under a Black Walnut tree, the blooms just don't stop coming! Easy to grow, fun to share with friends. Simply scatter on top of the last snow of the season before spring, or sow in fall for a bounty of beauty come spring. Keep seeds in the refrigerator until planting time.

PURPLE HYACINTH BEAN VINE Dolichos lablab 10+ seeds - $2.50. Absolutely beautiful vine with vivid hues of purple and
shades of the earth with regard to it's foliage. Pea-like blooms burst forth with colors of wine, white and more - so pretty!
While a single bean produces a lovely plant, this bean is amazing en masse! This year I grew a handful of seeds at the base of a tomato
cage. It grew to the top of the cage and then cascaded with vines, beans and beautiful blooms. It takes it's sweet time getting along,
but by summer you'll be glad you were patient. Lovely! A nice mix of black seeded, rust and speckled seeds may be included. Ah, lest we
    forget the importance of diversity!

QUEEN ANNE'S LACE / WILD CARROT / BEE'S NEST $2.50 QAL - Daucus carota L. / Pastinaca syluestris tennuifolia As this 2-4' tall biennial begins to fruit, the rays curl up into what appears to be a bird's nest, tightly holding the seeds inside. Very pretty fern-like foliage. Tall stalks support a burst of snowflake-like blossoms in white. In mass, mow after first bloom to produce a quick crop of more blooms at half the height this time!

ATTRACTS HUMMERS AND HONEY BEES ROSE OF SHARON - Pink with deep pink center Hibiscus syriacus 20+ seeds - $2.50. SHRUB ALTHAEA - HOLLYHOCK TREE. Actually more of a shrub, this plant can be cut back to short heights, even as a hedge. Prune as much or as little as you want. Regular pruning brings about larger blooms. Often thought to be the Hollyhock Tree, referred to as the Shrub Althaea. Malvaceae family member. I could not be any happier with this deciduous shrub! With easy-to-do pruning in autumn, you can train the Rose of Sharon to become a bushy hedge, a tall shrub, you decide! You can even let it do it's own thing and it will become much like a small tree bursting with blooms early summer on. Can easily grow to 10' tall by 6' wide. Very easy to grow and care for, does fine in shade, sun and even dappled lighting. Prune in the fall for larger flowers the following year. You can't go wrong adding this one to your garden! These seeds were collected from a plant I originally grew from seed planted indoors in the fall of 2001!

ATTRACTS HUMMERS AND HONEY BEES ROSE OF SHARON - White with deep center SHRUB ALTHAEA - Hibiscus syriacus 20+ seeds - $2.50. Often referred to as the Red Heart Hibiscus syriacus. I have several of these right outside of my office window next to our fish pond. This is a beautiful shrub you would be thankful to have planted. Easily controlled height and width by pruning. Late to bloom in spring but last to stop. Gorgeous!

ROSE OF SHARON - Variety package - SHRUB ALTHAEA - Hibiscus syriacus 20+ seeds - $2.50. A rainbow of blooms await you! In counting seed packs of all our Rose of Sharon seeds, I often have several seeds left over, which I toss into this variety pack. Sometimes I forget to mark which is which, and of course, these all go into the hodge podge pot. The result? A wonderful blend of blooms in so many shades!

RUDBECKIA - NATIVE Rudbeckia A good pinch with hundreds of seeds - $2.50. Far too often overlooked, but quite a treat! Even after the show is over in the extreme heat of summer, the stems and seed heads stand tall, just waiting for you to pick them. I like to pick the entire plant prior, hang upside down and wait for the seeds to begin dropping. After sifting, the chaff (leaves and petals) make the most interesting potpourri ingredients, because if they are picked at the right time, they retain the yellow petals and varied shades of green foliage. Easy to grow, easy to transplant if root is moved intact.

RUNNER BEAN - SCARLET Phaseolus coccineus 20+ large beans / seeds - $2.50. Annual edible ornamental indeed! Vines are quick growing and lush when grown in rich soil. Pea-type red blossoms make way for beans-a-plenty! Easy to grow and quite fun for children, too. Make a few teepees out of sticks and twigs, plant Red Scarlet Runner beans at the base of the teepee and lookout, here comes a fun place to play, and you can eat the beans growing on it! Bountiful and pretty annual.

SHOO-FLY / BLACK POD Nicandra physalodes 130+ seeds - $2.50. A Victorian Heirloom said to repel flies in an era gone by. Unique seed pods house a cherry-like casing loaded with seeds. Pretty flowers often give off an almost blue / purple hue. Dainty and delicate with attractive foliage. Returns each year from dropped seeds. Easy and quite a conversation piece! 130+ seeds is a lot, please share with friends.

SENSITIVE PLANT - Sleeping Grass - Mimosa pudica 50+ seeds.

SWEET MIGNONETTE Reseda odorata 100+ seeds - $2.50 per smidgen. If you enjoy heavily fragrant blossoms in the garden, this wonderful annual is the one for you! A vase full of fresh Sweet Mignonette smells so nice! Easy to grow. Simply asks well drained soil. Though it can be grown in the sun, I find that it prefers a bit of shade in areas where the hot summer sun seems to beat it down, especially here in Oklahoma zone 7. The perfumed scent - how could you resist? Rumored in history to have been the flower Napoleon Bonaparte brought back for his beloved Josephine. The plant may not be significant in the garden, but is a must for those who prefer cottage garden style. Very pleasant raspberry-like scent is such a delight. "Mignonette" is French for "Little Darling". Excellent choice for perfumed sachets and potpourri. Pinch tips to produce bushier plants. Direct sow in early spring after all frost danger has passed. A sun loving annual that will tolerate part shade. Grows 12-18" tall with wonderful spikes of creamsicle colored blooms. Attracts honeybees, perfect for those raising little winged friends as we do here on Wuv'n Acres!

WISTERIA - CHINESE Putting a rumor to rest, there is no such thing as a species of Wisteria tree, unless you prune it that way. Many people are under the impression that a tree form and a vine form are two differing plants. Oh, so not true. Let it grow with occasionall light pruning and it will be a vine. Cut it back to the largest section of the growth and allow it to form a trunk and wa-la, it will form an umbrella-like tree. Easy to grow, easy to start. Too often one hears horror stories of how out of control the Wisteria can be, but with regular pruning, there is no reason why this should be so. After the last frost you may transplant seedlings you would have started in the house several weeks earlier. The wisteria is very easy from seed, you'll be surprised! If you do your homework you will see that just a few seeds is more than anyone truly needs. One plant alone is a magnificent and grand asset to the garden! Wisteria often do not grow true from seed. This means your wisteria may revert back to it's ancestor's background, or it may retain the seed parent color, grow deeper or lighter in color as the plant shown You may even get an interesting new color. What fun! Performs best in a minimum of six (6) hours of full sun in a well drained fertile soil with a P.H. level of 6-7. Provide a trellis or other material if it will be allowed to climb.
Available in white, pink, purple and mixed variety packages below:

WISTERIA - CHINESE - MIX Wisteria 6 Seeds - $3.50. Includes 2 white, 2 purple and 2 pink seeds. See above for full description.

ZINNIA - Benary's Giant Lime Zinnia elegans 50+ seeds - $2.50. A big one, a beautiful one. And in lime, too! Growing about three feet tall on average, this one will brighten up your garden if nothing else will. Blooms can grow up to 4" wide! Sow five to six seeds per foot at just under the soil surface...about 1/4" deep. Imagine a ten foot row of lime colored zinnias! Wow! Makes a great cut flower. Just nip it with scissors before the bloom is completely open, plunk 'em in a vase of water and they will bloom in your house. Lovely.

AMARANTHUS - RED / BURGUNDY (Fuchsia) Amaranthus $2.50 for 250+ seeds. Amaranth is traditionally a leafy green plant with attractive seed heads in long mass groupings of seed heads. This one in particular is a brilliant fuchsia (think dark red) which seems to absolutely glow in the sunshine, and is simply amazing at sunset!

ARUNDO / BAMBOO - GIANT REED Arundo donax Linnaeus. 16.00 per tuber with culms.

AVAILABLE ONLY DURING LATE APRIL THROUGH AUGUST

No shipment of this item to California, Virginia or Texas

  • North African Perennial Giant Grass. First let me mention that botanically, Arundo donax is not considered a bamboo, but rather a Giant Reed. For the fun of it, we consider it a bamboo and thus refer to it as such here in Oklahoma. Here in zone 7 it is a perennial. Easy to grow in zones 6-10 If you can dig a hole and stuff the plant in, you can grow this river reed! Rapid growth returns even after cutting to the ground each year. On average grows 20 foot tall. A super tall cane with SO many uses!
  • Gigantic 20' (foot) tall grass. Please note, seeds in the plumes of Arundo are rarely viable except in very warm regions such as California. Arundo is spread by underground rhizomes, not by seed. Save yourself some money and trouble and lots of empty waiting. Arundo Donax seeds will not sprout. It is important to either keep it contained in pots or planted where you are not worried about it moving. I made the mistake of thinking it would look lovely at the corner of our yard next to the chain link fence. Well, yes, it does, but it's not exactly easy to divide next to the fencing once a couple years have passed.

If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music. This little charmer is not just for farming, folks! Each year I plant a pot full and place the pot in an old apple basket. The result is a pretty little pot of plants the honey bees can't stay away from! Since hubby keeps honey bees, we now place extra baskets of Buckwheat near their hives. VERY easy to grow and improves soil quality to boot! I encourage you to research Buckwheat, you'd be surprised at the wonderful things it does and can do! Don't forget about Buckwheat Pancakes!

CAT GRASS or RODEO OATS Avena sativa $2.50

    COTTON - DOMESTIC FIBER 20 seeds - $2.50.

FLAX - OMEGA / GOLDEN GRAIN Linum usitatissimum $2.50 per package of 100+ seeds.

GOLDENROD Solidago altissima $2.50 per package of 50+ seeds.

If you are already screaming "Weed!" then you have not done your homework, and should.

The Goldenrod is a very important plant in nature. In error, it is often confused with ragweed and blamed for allergy problems. Oh, but that is simply not the truth! It is the Ragweed which holds responsibility - in bloom at the same time as the Goldenrod.
A common wildflower throughout North America, there exist many Goldenrod varieties. This particular variety - altissima, can easily reach six foot tall. Blooming heavily in late summer and into the fall, the golden clusters exhibited by the Goldenrod cannot be beaten for intense color!

Tidbits which may be of interest:

  • The Praying Mantis lay their eggs on Goldenrod. When they hatch, dinner is already served by the larvae of the Gall Fly (Eurosta solidaginis)
  • Bees, moths, butterflies, wasps, spiders - it seems every creepy little thing imagineable is drawn to this plant.
  • There exists a Goldenrod Spider; Misumena vatia, which makes the plant it's home, disguising it's color to blend with the plant.
  • Alas, the ever-present population of birds approach, finding a virtual buffet of bugs on the Goldenrod!

As this is an extremely tall plant, it should not be considered in formal gardens, but more appropriate in a country setting where it can be allowed to grow and spread at will.

  • HAIRY VETCH Vicia villosa $2.50

INDIAN WOOD OATS / WOOD-OATS Chasmanthium latifolium 50 floret clusters - $2.50. Zones 5-9. 24-36" tall. Indian Woodoats are one of my most favorite ornamental grasses, because other than being an attractive native plant in my garden, it provides a bounty of craft material! Of the Gramineae family, this ornamental grass is often dubbed Northern Sea Oats / Seaoats (which is actually Uniola paniculata, and by the way, they don't grow in the sea), Broadleaf uniola and also Spangle Grass. Though not botanically correct, the kids call this one Rattlesnake grass, as the seed heads resemble the tail of a snake. Similar to Quaking Grass. Originally named Uniola latifolia by Andre Michaux.

Growing on average (at least here in Oklahoma) about three feet tall, it's arching branches display many attractive seed heads known as spikelets, which change color with the season. Each seed segment is known as a floret, which when held up to the light, allows view of the seed within. Performs best in full sun with proper drainage, though I must say ours is in a shady area of the woods, receiving only the sunlight which penetrates the trees.

LIRIOPE or LILY TURF or MUSCARI Liriope muscari / Ophiopogon muscari 5 plants - $2.50. Also known as Lilyturf or Monkey Grass. Performs quite well in sun or shade, though it produces more flowers in the sun. You can't fail! This ornamental grass is so very easy to grow and just about the most durable thing growing around here! Even when it's snowing like crazy and ice is covering things, the Liriope stands firm, refusing to die. Pronounced Luh-ry-oh-pee, but you can put your own twist on it. ;-)

Does best in a PH of 4.5-6.0 in zones 6-10. Long, slender 10-18" grass forms 12-18" rounded mounds and make a nice statement. It is evergreen and quite a valuable asset to gardens. In late summer, pretty stalks of purple in various hues make an appearance. Following the flowers come the blackish berries which are the seeds of this lovely groundcover. Multiplies well and can be divided easily for friends or to expand your plantings.

This selection will be five divisions or plants, please read what I am calling a plant before you order. As Liriope grows in bunches, I will separate the bunch and send five sprouts / plants / divisions / whatever you want to call them. They will be trimmed for shipping purposes and thus will not have long arching foliage on them. They will, however, be freshly dug when you order. They are not sitting in pots ready to go. Just wanted to let you know. The plants, after trimming, will be 9" and under, ready to plant if your season is ready. Until otherwise posted, you may order as many bunches as you wish, but please note that orders over 2 (ten divisions) will require extra postage. Please contact me prior to ordering more than two sets. Thank you kindly.

MILLET - RED $2.50 - 1/2 tsp = Hundreds of seeds. You'll be amazed what one little seed will grow, let alone the hundreds of seeds included in this seed pack. Long branches (sprays) of millet make for wonderful decor as well as a wonderful and natural treat for caged or outdoor birds. Fabulous food for Parrots, Cockatiels, Parakeets, wild birds, etc. After the birds have pecked off all the seeds, simply remove the empty spray and provide a new one.

MILLET - WHITE $2.50 - 1/2 tsp. = Hundreds of seeds. You'll be amazed what one little seed will grow, let alone the hundreds of seeds included in this seed pack. Long branches (sprays) of millet make for wonderful decor as well as a wonderful and natural treat for caged or outdoor birds. PEAS - BLACKEYED $2.50 per package of 20+.

PIPER SUNDANGRASS Sorghum bicolor var. sudanense $2.50 1 full teaspoon = hundreds of seeds. Formerly known as Sorghum sudanense. This poor grass has so many silly names and synonyms. Just a few: Andropogon drummondii, Sorghum bicolor var. sudanense, Sorghum vulgare var. drummondii. Common names range from Sudan-grass to Shattercane / Shatter cane. Often referred to as Sudan Grass and Sudangrass. If you are looking for something unusual that will grow quickly, this is it! Typically used as a forage, emergency forage or green manure, I prefer to use it as a block to hide hubby's junk piles out back. Reaches 6 to 8 foot tall. Pulls excess nitrogen from soil. For protection, consider it an annual crop, as it doesn't care for frost, after which you should not use as forage. Be wary, though, sorghum tends to attract those nasty little stink bugs! This order is for a full teaspoon of seeds, which is nothing to sneeze at, considering the seeds are not too tiny. This is hundreds upon hundreds of seeds! Beautiful colors are included! A creamy off white, deep burgundy, deep maroon, etc. Makes the perfect companion for our Colors in the Clouds giant sunflowers! The grass will hide the bare stalks of the flowers while the sunflower heads rise above the foliage. Very pretty! Looks stunning against a backdrop or side of the house.

WHEAT / WHEATBERRIES - STANDARD $2.50 - One heaping teaspoon full of seeds. Don't laugh, you would be amazed what you could learn about wheat if you only took the time. Wholegrain wheat is easy to grow, wonderful when sprouted on a sandwich, attractive in crafts and a healthy addition to your diet! Once you grow wheat you will have a better understanding of all that is entailed in it's process before reaching your table in other forms. A great teaching tool for the kids or just to quench your curiosity for farming. Give it a try, then bundle the crop you grow for a unique fall decoration!

BUTTER PRINT Abutilon theophrasti - 50+ seeds - $2.50. Seeds look like itty bitty hearts. Also known as Velvet Leaf, Piemarker Plant, Butter Print and China Jute. Not for fancy gardens, the purpose of planting this one would be for it's oddity and use in potpourri. Interesting rounded pods with raised ribs resemble a marker for pie slices. Though rumored to be used by farm housewives to make fancy designs on butter pats, this should not be used as such. It is merely a resemblance to the interesting twisted tops of individual butter servings. Leaves are so velvety soft, you can't help but to keep feeling them. A tall one indeed! A summer bloomer from Southern Asia.

    CARAWAY - $2.50.

CARDAMON / CARDAMOM - $2.50. So often, this This zingiber is incorrectly spelled as Cardamom. It is in fact, Cardamon. A wonderful Indian seed native to India, the scent of this seed is enough to put visions of sweet treats in your head! When you receive the seeds, be sure to open the package and inhale deeply. Wow, what a scent! Grown as an ornamental, it can easily reach towering heights. The seed pods are rather interesting, having three chambers, or cells, each holding multiple seeds. The plant itself is similar in growth to bamboo.

    CAT MINT / CATMINT - $2.50.

CAT NIP / CATNIP Nepeta cataria - $2.50. Not the same as Cat Mint. While I don't subscribe to the 'It will make your cat high" statement, I have to say we've had catnip growing by the gate for years and I haven't seen a cat nip it yet. *grin* It's humorous connotations aside, this is a great plant for the garden or backdrop. It behaves itself, has attractive foliage and pretty blooms, is very durable and golly, well, what else can I say? I like it!

CHAMOMILE - GERMAN Chamomolla recutita - 1 tsp. full of seeds and seed heads - $2.50. If in seed form only, we will send a smidgen, which is actually a multitude of seeds. Often spelled 'Chammomile'. The sweet smell of the German Chamomile in summer, mmm! Sow in spring or transplant seedlings from greenhouse growth after all danger of frost has passed. Our seeds are organic and thus may be seeped and consumed as a tea. Simply add the contents of the seed package to one cup of boiling water. Allow to seep 4-5 minutes, strain and enjoy! For those into recycling, a coffee filter will make several tea bags. Place loose tea into a cut of coffee filter, fold over, and tie shut with a small sewing thread. Has an apple-like aroma, thus the name Manzanilla, named after manzana - meaning apple. 15-24" tall annual prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. A very nice plant. If you've never enjoyed a cup of chamomile tea out of your own garden, you have missed an important part of gardening life.

CHIVES - GARLIC Allium tuberosum100+ seeds - $2.50. Zones 4-8. Seems to do best with a 4.5 - 7.5 ph soil. Also referred to as Chinese Leeks or Garlic Chives. In just 75-90 days, you will have fresh chives to add to your soups, stews, salads, gourmet vinegars, spreads and so many other wonderful things! Can't use them all right now? A Mediterranean native herb which is easy to grow in containers or directly in the ground after all danger of frost. Also known as Chinese Parsley. Foliage can be harvested for culinary use as Cilantro, as in many Indian and Mexican dishes such as salsa. Seeds may be toasted, crushed and rubbed on various meats before cooking / roasting. A unique plant to grow, indeed! Interesting tidbit? The name 'coriander' is formed with the Greek work 'kopis', meaning 'bug'.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY MILKWEED Asclepias viridis 20+ seeds - $2.50.

    MULLEIN / VERBASCUM - $2.50 - 1/8 tsp.

This item is not available for shipment to COLORADO, HAWAII or SOUTH DAKOTA

A unique biennial herb which is two in one! (I think I'll stick to my store bought regimen, though.)

Shown here are several plants in my rock garden. You might put cedar chips or an attractive rock beneath the leaves to keep them out of the mud when it rains. I use large rocks found here on our farm to hold the leaves up. The dried stalks are a wonderful item when used in dried floral arrangements. If you enjoy birds & butterflies in your garden you'll want to plant this blooming beauty! Superb for borders & cottage gardens with a southern exposure.

Light: Full Sun, Type: Perennial, Rec. Zone: 5 - 9, Bloom time: Summer, Usage: Borders, beds. Flower Color: Yellow. Size: Up to eight feet tall! Growth: Vertical Stalk, Horizontal Foliage. Propagation: Seeds, cuttings, division, root cuttings.

Keep seeds in the refrigerator until ready to plant. Please consult your doctor before using any plant or parts of a plant for medicinal purposes. Picked and packed from my own plants! Our seeds are kept refrigerated at all times, please continue to do so until you are ready to plant them. Seeds lose viability when kept at room temperature for lengths of time.

MUSTARD - BROWN - $2.50 1/2 teaspoon of seeds. Plenty!

MUSTARD - YELLOW - $2.50 1/2 tsp. of seeds is way more than you will need. Interesting bit of trivia for you...A quote from a biblical reference often names the mustard seed. Millions of people purchased the glass domed cases housing this type of mustard seed, yet it was not even this species of mustard which was the true seed intended in the following quote from a bible: "What is the Kingdom of God like? To what shall I compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and put in his own garden. It grew, and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky lodged in its branches." (Internet source).
It is actually not the Western mustard we know and love, but the mustard referred to in the quote which grows to approximately 12' tall, which would indeed house a bird and it's fine feathered friends. Here's another quote in the form of a poem fun for children to recite:

The kingdom is like a mustard seed
Small at first but it did succeed
To grow with branches far and wide
    Onto which birds did abide
The visible church started quite small
But popular today with buildings quite tall
But beware of the birds that nest in its branches
who take advantage of the circumstances.

    POPPY - BREAD SEED - $2.50.

    POPPY - SHIRLEY / CORN - $2.50.

Easy to grow in most zones, 4-11, it can reach 24-36" tall with ease. Prefers full sun but does quite well in partial sun in hot locations. Blooms in late spring to early summer with beautiful lilac (you may consider them violet) colored flowers. Our plants are located on the south side of our yard even though it is shaded by a very large black walnut tree, and do quite well.

SAGE - WHITE Salvia apiana 150+ seeds per pinch $2.50. Best grown in zones 6-9, or dig up & move indoors during winter. Also known as Smudge Sage and Grandfather Sage. Very unique herb you'll love for it's multiple personalities! As if it were not enough to have attractive waxy-looking grayish green foliage, the honey bees enjoy many a moment foraging about the blooms, regardless of the fight they endure to do so. Native Americans use this very herb in ceremonies as a smudge stick and also as incense. It also has many medicinal properties! Grows on average 2-5 foot tall, slowly but surely, best in full sun. Seeds can be very sporadic in germinating, not one to try if you give up on seed sprouting easily. Our seeds are kept refrigerated.

SELF HEAL Prunella vulgaris 100+ seeds - $2.50. Self Heal is a wonderful 8" tall sprawling herb you're sure to love in your garden! Grown in mass produces the best effect, as it has interesting purple-green foliage with spikes of flowers that turn paper-like as the season progresses. Best in full sun, but tolerates partial shade in well drained soil. The young shoots and leaves are used medicinally for healing wounds. Please note, I am not an expert on using herbs for medicinal purposes. Please consult your doctor before ever beginning such a process.

SESAME - BLACK Sesamum indicum 100+ seeds - $2.50. Also known as Benne. Not your standard hamburger bun seeds, but BLACK seeds. No, they have not been roasted or burnt. (giggle) Unique plant indeed. When someone asks about your plants, they will be surprised when you tell them you are growing Sesame seeds! This plant should be grown as an annual, though it requires a long, warm growing season. It is often said the popular phrase "Open, sesame!" derived from the longing for the pods to open. It would be my opinion the prhase was directed more at the buds, as the flower, though insignificant in size, is a beautiful bloom worthy of waiting for. However, we'll set aside my personal thoughts and get to the facts. The seed pods, when cracking open, imitate the sound of a lock opening, a 'click' or 'crack' sound. Thus, the term was born. The clicking of a lock, or opening of a door...Open Sesame! Or so they say.

Plant height ranges from 2 to 6 feet tall. Best planted in full sun, they ask only one foot spacing. Does not appreciate drought, so keep them watered well, but not flooded. Sow outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed. A tip? Start seeds indoors on a heated germination mat in peat pellets, then transplant them outdoors as soon as they sprout. This way you tend not to forget about them as you would just dropping seed into the ground, which can also be done.

A fast growing deciduous tree reaching the average of 30'-40' tall featuring a rounded crown. Absolutely striking in the fall with it's brilliant 15" panicles of showy yellow flowers. Following the flowers come stunning drapes of clustered 3-sided seed pods covered with a papery and shiny 'balloon' if you will. Photo shown includes three of the colors you will see at one time on the tree. Beautiful! Gorgeous when cut as an everlasting display. Native to Eastern Asia. Performs best in loose, well drained soil in zones 5 (protected) through 9. Full sun produces the best show. Not available for residents of Florida. Sorry, folks, The Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council states this one is a pest. (Odd, considering you can run over them with the lawnmower to keep them in check) In China, the seeds are used for necklaces and the trees are used medicinally. The seeds are very round, so don't lay them on your desk if you live in a crooked house like we do, those suckers will roll all over the place!

On a final note, for lazy gardeners, you will love this one. Last fall, when the trees produced seed, I collected all that I could reach, leaving the rest to nature. During a wind storm, one of the branches was broken and fell to the ground. This branch had a big cluster of seed pods. Alas, I was tired and had plenty for stock, so I tossed the branch into a compost bin. I was unaware the branch didn't make it, but instead found it's way into a decorative bathtub intended for plants. I found a zillion baby Rain Trees sprouting in the tub come spring. Now if that isn't easy gardening, I don't know what is.

HACKBERRY TREE Celtis occidentalis 80+ seeds - $2.50.

KENTUCKY COFFEE BEAN TREE Gymnocladus (meaning 'naked branch') dioicus / dioica 5 large seeds - $2.50. Seeds are poisonous, do not consume! The term 'Diocious' indicates that flowers are present on both male and female trees, needing one another for pollination. Zones 5-8, full sun in well drained soil. From the Caesalpiniaceae family, this tree is native to eastern Northeastern America. Slow to leaf in spring, it quickly makes up for bare branches with it's huge leaves. Growing quickly to it's first 60-70 feet tall, it can reach 100 foot tall in the right environment. Oddly enough, though referred to as a 'coffee bean tree', you would hardly wish to drink the bitter strain from them, as the raw seeds are toxic. Propagation by root cuttings or seeds. Female trees will produce bean pods, male trees will not. I will scarify the seeds before shipment.

OSAGE ORANGE / HEDGE APPLE / BODARK ARROW WOOD TREE Maclura pomifera Also Ioxylon pomiferum and Toxylon pomiferum. 20+ seeds. What an interesting tree to grow!

Best goown in zones 4-9. Grows well in sun to partial shade, blooming in mid summer.
Deciduous foliage, Often referred to as various other names such as:
  • Hedge Apple or Hedgeapple (Yep, this one's good)
  • Horse Apple (incorrect common name)
  • Monkey Balls (another incorrect name)
  • Mock Oranges (not for human consumption...another incorrect term)
  • Bois d'arc (though honestly, who speaks this way in Oklahoma?)

Often found growing wild in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas, these trees should be planted more often! Provides fruit for wildlife through winter in the bountiful fruits they drop containing seeds local squirrels just love. The early 1800's made use of the Hedge Apple trees by growing them close together, thus creating an actual living fence. Trees stand for decades defending themselves against termites and other nasty critters which would otherwise deteriorate other woods. Called "Bodark" which means "Bow Wood"...a trivial tidbit referring to the prized wood for it's use in making bows. Rumored to keep roaches and spiders away, but I'll have to do more research on that note. Noted to have bright orange roots which provide a wonderful yellow dye. If looking for more detail on this wonderful tree, I encourage you to visit this site!

  • PERSIMMON TREE 10+ seeds - $2.50. To me, the most interesting thing about a Persimmon tree is, in fact, the unique seeds inside the fruits. If you pry open a seed, you will see a ghost-like formation (which is actually the leaf embryo forming) in the center of the seed, often shaped like a fork, spoon or knife. Seeing a spoon indicates a cold winter, as in spooning, or shoveling snow. When fall approaches, one of the first signs of winter coming is the dropping of the wonderful Persimmon fruit here at our home in Northeastern Oklahoma. A tree often reaching anywhere from 20-70' tall, it's diameter is typically 1-2' wide. The tree is a strong one, with the close-grained wood often used for golf club heads, billard cues, weaving shuttle tools, veneer and flooring uses. It's fruit reminds me of an apricot with a plum-like texture inside each of the small rounded colorful fruits. You won't believe the taste of Persimmon bread in the fall, so you'll surely wish to bake some once your tree produces. Also used in puddings and cakes! If you wish to harvest fruit, you must be quick if you live in the country as we do. The cows, squirrels, rabbits, deer, turkey, quail, skunks and racoons are often caught sneaking the fruits! As the Persimmon can be either male or female, I have included 10+ seeds for you to ensure you receive both.

FIRETHORN Pyracantha crenato-serrata 20+ seeds - $2.50. Zones 7-10. Bright scarlet red berries along branches of this winter hardy shrub attract our fine feathered friends. Even with snow on the branches, the berries stand strong, glowing through the white of winter. Wildlife come to visit when food supplies are short. Excellent decor addition for fall! I enjoy a basket of branches in my living room every season. Simply beautiful! Easy to grow. Berries are harvested fresh and allowed to dry. They will require a cold period before planting. This can be achieved in many ways, the easiest being to plant outdoors and allow them to go through natural stratification. Such a procedure allows the seed to hibernate, so to speak, in the cold. When spring arrives, this tells the seed it's time to sprout. Isn't Mother Nature amazing? Easy to grow, a nice landscaping choice.

SUMAC Rhus 100+ seeds (tsp) - $2.50. When planted in mass, the Sumac makes a grand and gorgeous statement of bold red and crimson colors in the fall. Simply amazing! A deciduous clonal 3-10' tall shrub which spreads from rhizomes. Best in open land where you are not concerned with spreading. Good choice for erosion control. A wonderful shrub for open lands in that it attracts birds to it's seeds, butterflies to it's flowers. Deer and rabbits will make an appearance when other food sources are low. Some varieties are poisonous. Click here for an excellent site with information about poisonous / non-poisonous sumac. For Honey Bee keepers, you'll find a very fascinating article about using Sumac berry buds to smoke your bees on pages 40-41 in the September 2004 issue of Bee CUlture magazine. Jim Ovbey and DuRant Warwick outline the reduction in Varoa mites when smoking the bees.

    Also known as:
  • Flameleaf Sumac
  • Shining Sumac
  • Black Sumac
  • Winged Sumac

  • ATTRACTS HUMMERS AND HONEY BEES TAMARIND TREE Tamarindus indica 5 large seeds - $2.50. Of the Caesalpiniaceae family. Hardy in zones 9-11, must be brought indoors in other zones dipping 25° or below. Makes an interesting houseplant for those who do not live in such warm climates as Florida or Texas. These trees have a deep root system and can reach over 40' tall in proper zone setting. Rose / yellow flowers late in the season, very early spring add an ornamental touch, thus it is often used as such.

ATTRACTS HUMMERS AND HONEY BEES TRUMPET VINE / BUTTERFLY VINE Campsis radicans 100+ seeds -$2.50. Though not actually a tree, this vine can be cut and trimmed to behave like a small tree. You can keep it cut back resembling a hedge of sorts, or you can allow it to scramble and climb high. Simply toss the seed pod into the refrigerator until spring, or provide stratification. Even easier, simply plant the seeds in the fall and allow it to go through a natural cold period. Come spring, the sprouts will arrive and begin to form your new Trumpet Vine!

ATTRACTS HUMMERS AND HONEY BEES YUCCA - WHITE Yucca filamentosa 20+ seeds - 2.50. There are many Yucca in the gene pool, though I am pretty convinced I have correctly identified this one as filamentosa. Also given common names such as Adam's Needle, Spoonleaf Yucca, Needle Palm. A member of the Agavaceae family. Having spent most of my adolescent years in New Mexico, the Yucca was a natural choice to add to our seed bank. Even in Oklahoma, these plants are durable, tolerating even the most obscene treatment through harsh weather, little watering and other environmental factors. I admit to digging mine up, removing the babies and plunking them elsewhere each summer. One day I'll have them lining the sidewalks at the rate I'm going.

Easy to grow, easy to care for. A special showing of long canes appear in the summer with numerous white blossoms loaded with nectar. After the flowers have passed, the pods remaining on the stalks make excellent fodder for potpourri and various craft projects.

Not an advised plant for fussy gardeners afraid of work, as it will multiply. Get out your shovel, dig one up and share with friends.
